Our party often attempts to "disbelieve the illusion" - it's a table classic, and you'd be surprised how often it works. But one night when it did not I imagined how we might look to a spectator and the result was - in my mind - we would appear quite mad, and that made me laugh.
It later occured to me when I showed my friends this comic that it also seems like a trauama behavior. The sense of which is proportionate to the number of old school dungeons survived. When you have seen... "things," staring hard into a suspiciously blacker than dark corner and proclaiming with confidence "I see you," seems not only sane but an entirely reasonable bluff to make in the interest of survival. As is any behavior caused by an encounter with a Lurker Above. Sweet dreams.
